About the university

Even back on the 1st of May 1953 in Trenčín, the Slovak institution for further education of doctors is created, which until the 30th of June 1966 begins to shape the base of education of medical workers. After the building of the new structure in Bratislava the institution moved on the 1st of July 1966 to the capital city under a new name . Institution for further education or doctors and pharmacists in Bratislava, under which it worked up until 1991. Exactly in the middle of the year, on the 1st of July 1991 it is renamed to the Institute for further education of workers in medicine, Bratislava. Content and form of study reacted to the needs of medical practice and hand in hand with that came the last name change: on the 1st of November 1998 the institute changed to the Slovak postgraduate academy of medicine in Bratislava.

According to law of the National Council of Slovak Republic no. 401/2002 Z.z. about the creation of SMU, it has been created on the 1st of September 2002, Slovak Medical University in Bratislava as a state school of the university type.

The Slovak Medical University in Bratislava is the only medical university in Slovakia which is mono thematically dedicated to educating students in medical fields in all three degrees of university education and is simultaneously the only institution in Slovakia which has been securing the education of medical personnel under various names since 1953.

The Slovak Medical University is a state school of the university type operating under the resort of the Ministry of health of Slovakia and has four faculties:

  • The faculty of nursing and scientific medical studies
  • The faculty of medicine
  • The faculty of public health
  • The faculty of medicine with the seat in Banská Bystrica

At the Slovak Medical University, the scientific and research base is highly developed and consists of the departments of the university which fall under individual faculties.

  
The Slovak Medical University operates under the spirit of the constitution of medical universities of the world Magna Charta Universitatum, in the spirit of democratic values, humanism, tolerance, it operates as an apolitical institution. It leads the students to uphold the Hippocratic oath and to the protection of life and health from birth to a dignified natural death.

The Slovak Medical University in Bratislava has the right to grant academic titles to graduates of the offered fields of study listed under the fields of study. The Slovak Medical University and its Faculty of public health also has the right to organize inaugural procedures and working on naming the professors.
